LASIK Eye Surgery

LASIK Eye Surgery employs the use of a precisely programmed laser to modify the shape of your cornea so that your vision will improve. It does this through the process of ablation, which means that the laser removes the top layer of cells on the cornea to gently reshape it.

In traditional LASIK eye surgery, a laser called an Excimer Laser is used to cut a thin round flap of tissue from the cornea’s surface.  This flap is then folded back to expose the stoma, which are the striations of eye muscles in the iris. The excimer laser is then directed to vaporize areas of the stroma that might be causing refractive vision errors such as near sightedness or far sightedness.  After these areas are ablated, the flap is then replaced and the eye, which heals faster than almost any part of the body, heals itself in a day or two.

LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted in-situ Keratomileusis. There are 3 main varieties of LASIK surgery, only one of which can be  correctly defined as “LASIK eye surgery”, and it is principally used for people who are very shortsighted or very longsighted.

The complication rates are comparatively low and serious complications are extremely rare. In most cases, complications can be corrected with additional laser treatment.  In general, this is one of the safest, most performed and fined tuned of cosmetic surgical procedures available.
