LASIK Eye Surgery Risks

Like all surgeries, there is a LASIK eye surgery risk.  However, it is a very safe procedure performed every day by experienced surgeons. The following is a list of risks and complications from LASIK.

Loss of vision is very rare, and an absolute worst-case scenario. Some people lose lines of vision on the vision chart that can’t be corrected with contact lenses, glasses or surgery. This is usually do to a loss of contrast sensitivity. Less than 3% of people report worse vision after LASIK. Most complications are the result of being a poor LASIK candidate. However, your doctor should discuss with you your eligibility and treatment options. You should speak with your LASIK eye surgeon about any complications he may have had with his patients and how he dealt with them.

Your vision may not be corrected. This is the risk if you are very myopic or hyperopic.  If you are farsighted, the results of your surgery could be good at first and then diminish as time goes on.

Glare, haloes and double vision can also develop. Impairment of night vision is also common. This usually diminishes over time.

You may be under or over corrected. Usually this is treatable, but in rare cases a second LASIK surgery treatment may not be possible. Some people still need reading glasses after surgery.

Some people develop severe dry eye syndrome. As a result of the LASIK eye surgery your eyes may not be able to produce enough tears to keep the eye wet enough to be comfortable. The condition can be managed by drop therapy.

It should be noted that the American Association of Professional Eyecare Specialists (AAPECS) concluded in a recent study of LASIK surgery statistics that 55.3 percent of LASIK patients achieve visual acuity of 20/20 or better, while 92.6 percent of patients achieve vision of 20/40 or better. It is considered a very safe procedure, and most complications from LASIK are usually resolved over time or by a second procedure.
