LASEK Eye Surgery
LASEK eye surgery is similar LASIK, but no flap is cut. Instead, an injection of alcohol is used to float the epithelium, giving the doctor access to the cornea for corrections. LASEK is a good alternative for patients who should not have the corneal flap cut with a laser, due to a preexisting health condition that makes them more vulnerable, having large pupils, or a predisposition to dry eyes.
LASEK Eye Surgery is best suited for:
- Pilots, athletes or those involved in occupations where correct vision is mandatory.
- People who are very nearsighted (myopic)
- Individuals with very thin corneas that are not suitable for LASIK procedures
There are some advantages to having this procedure including no weakening of the cornea due to surgery, scarring of the cornea and a lower risk of infection. This is because the eye is not cut.
LASEK results can vary from individual to individual from the first 3 to 5 days depending on how well the patient is healing. On average most patients have visual acuity comparable to LASIK and better than PRK.
