Implantable Contact Lenses
Vision correction using implantable contact lenses, or ICL, is another alternative for patients with hyperopia or presbyopia. The natural lens of the eye is removed and replaced with a plastic lens.
There are many types of lenses but the latest, which was just approved n 2005 is the ICL, which stands for implantable Collamer Lens. The Visian ICL is made partly from a biocompatible material known as collagen. It works best for patients who have nearsightedness in the moderate ranges of –3 to –20 Diopters.
Unlike older lens replacement options, the newest models of implantable contact lenses designed to work with the eye muscles and change focus naturally, improving near, intermediate, and distance vision.
These lenses first received FDA approval in 2004. These surgically implanted lenses primarily are considered appropriate for higher levels of nearsightedness.
