Astigmatism and LASIK
Astigmatism is a condition in which the cornea's curvature is asymmetrical (the eye is shaped like a football or egg instead of a basketball). This causes light to refract in a way that causes blurred vision.
Astigimatism, LASIK eye surgery can be corrected with an excimer laser. After the corneal flap is lifted irregularities on the corneal surface are smoothed out so that vision is clear again and the corneal curve is rounder and less steep. The excimer laser uses a cool ultraviolet light beam to precisely remove (ablate) very tiny bits of tissue from the cornea to reshape it. When the cornea is reshaped in the right way, it works better to focus light into the eye.
