Am I a Candidate for LASIK?
Are you a good candidate for LASIK eye surgery?
In general the best candidates for LASIK eye surgery:
- Do not have a preexisting eye condition such as glaucoma, ocular herpes simplex, cataracts or keratoconus
- Are in good physical, mental and psychological health
- Are w illing to learn about the procedure and follow post-operative instructions
- Are realistic in their expectations
- Are at least 19 years of age
Physically you are a good LASIK eye surgery candidate if:
- Your corneas have a thickness of up to 500 microns or greater (this can only be determined by a surgeon)
- Your pupil diameter cannot be more than 6.5 mm although in special cases pupils that are as large in diameter as 9 mm have been operated on
- You must not have had a significant change to your prescription in a year
- You must not have myopia that is worse than -12.00 Diopters
- You must not have hyperopia that is worse than + 5 Diopters
- You must not have astigmatism that is worse than –9 Diopters
People with the following physical conditions also do not make ideal candidates for LASIK eye surgery:
- Autoimmune diseases such as AIDS, lupus, arthritis
- Vascular diseases
- Diabetes
- Pregnancy or nursing
